Welcome to the Garforth Community College Sixth Form website. I hope that you find the site interesting and informative, and that if you are not already a member of our Sixth Form that you will come and join us soon.
Garforth Sixth Form has grown during the last few years and now has a much larger number of students from a wide range of schools. There has also been a growth in the number and range of courses which are offered to students. This gives greater choice and flexibility and offers the chance for a different experience from that of a main school pupil. It gives the opportunity for students to take more responsibility for their individual learning progress.
In the Sixth Form there will be a number of significant changes. Different styles of dress, studying favourite subjects, new tutor groups, a different pastoral system, off-site centres, even a new type of day will all present challenges. I feel the most important change is the different relationship between the student and the tutor. The student is expected to take the initiative much more. They are expected to take more responsibility for themselves. This might be as simple as being better organised, working independently, reading additional books or simply acknowledging when things are not good. Talking to the tutor is the most important step to being an independent learner. Being a Sixth Form student will involve reading notices regularly and acting on them. It will involve attending scheduled meetings and lessons so that you are well informed. Most of all it will hopefully mean that you will get involved in all aspects of Sixth Form Life, both in the classroom and in other ways.
Sixth Form study is about being successful academically; and developing the life skills which will carry students to their next stage, so that they are successful in later life. At Garforth we like to think that we combine academic expectations with good pastoral care, so that students are enabled to be as successful as they wish.
I hope your time at Garforth will be both productive and pleasurable. The Year 12 tutors, Learning Mentor, Study Support Coordinator and myself look forward to getting to know you all over the first few weeks, and look forward to your future progress in Garforth Sixth Form.
